Cases of young children being bitten or scratched by a bat have been reported. Also at risk are mentally incapacitated adults and sleeping adults who may be in the same room as a bat and have no idea they've been bitten or scratched.



Rabies symptoms - the irritability, headaches, fever, itching at the wound site - are initially innocuous. But they progress to throat spasms. The central nervous system eventually shuts down; convulsions are followed by paralysis and death.



In addition, if the animal is nocturnal but seen being active in daylight, it is important to report it to your local animal control organization. However, if the animal is your pet, one that hasn't been updated with the rabies shot, signs could be anything from sudden mood changes, drooling and/or going into hiding.



Rabies is one of the few diseases that can be easily spread from animal to human. And while it is of utmost importance that pet owners protect their animals from rabies so they do not lose the animal itself, it is even more important that they vaccinate in order to protect any people that may come into contact with their pet.

The infection attacks the central nervous system and causes encephalopathy - disease of the brain - and therefore also causes neurological symptoms. As the illness progresses, symptoms include agitation and anxiety, confusion, difficulty swallowing and excessive salivation, fear of water, hallucinations, insomnia and partial paralysis.



This is a serious viral illness that primarily affects animals, but can also affect humans. Rabies is derived from the Latin meaning 'to rage' as rabid animals can appear disturbed and angry. Most animal cases include cats, dogs, livestock, skunks, raccoons, bats and rodents. Only mammals can contract this disease. Each year, 50,000 people around the world die of the disease.



The risk of contracting rabies from your cat, or any other, is very small. The disease is so deadly, however, that if your cat were to contract it, he would need to be humanely killed immediately, and you would need to have a series of inoculations for your own protection.



Though people are of the popular belief that throwing water on suspected rabies infected animal or human is the test for the disease, it is utterly cruel. Water inflicts pain and suffering on rabid patients. There are other ways to test for rabies.
