They live in the latter parts of the small intestine of infected persons and migrate out of the anus where the females lay their eggs. When mated, the females lay thousands of eggs at the anus, which usually causes intense itching in the anus but also in the vagina and vulva in young girls.



The eggs of pinworms become embedded in the fingernails; when hands go unwashed, then food is consumed. These eggs will enter the body through the digestive system. while in the small intestine eggs hatch, the pinworms then travel toward the large intestine. The pinworms will then stay and attach the the intestine wall until they mature, usually a few weeks.



Many pinworms have no symptom or the cause a minor problem. The most common symptom of pinworms is an itchy rectal area. Symptoms reach to the worst position at night when the worms are most active and crawl out of the anus to deposit their eggs. Although pinworm infections can be annoying, they do not cause any serious health problems and are usually not dangerous.



Transmission can occur via direct contact with inanimate objects. Contaminated towels, furniture, sinks, toilets, bedclothes, bedding, doorknobs, or other objects are common sources of infection. Living with a person who is infected, eating before washing hands, and poor personal or group hygiene, create environments that are conducive to infection.



That doesn't mean, however, it's a good idea automatically to give kids iron supplements. Before giving supplements, you probably need a blood test to make sure there's really still an iron deficiency. That will cost about $40 in the US, as an add-on to a doctor's visit, if you don't have insurance.



All this being said, this is the principle behind the commercial "natural" treatments for parasites you can find in stores and on the net. Each treatment takes 4 days. Since day 4 requires use of a laxative, many people find it best to start the treatment on a Wednesday or Thursday.



Although it is a common feeling today, that parasitic worms are harmful to your health, they aren't in their normal numbers. In fact, they are a perfectly normal, essential and healthy part of you, just as bacteria are. The problem (if it can be described as that) occurs when they proliferate into vastly increased numbers.



The worms causing this infection are about one-half inch in length. At the time when the infected person is sleeping, the female pinworms leave the intestinal tract. If you think your child has any of the symptoms then take them to a doctor for further confirmation. The doctor is likely to take a swab test from the anus in order to see if any eggs are present. This test is then sent off to a laboratory for analysis.



Hemorrhoids are more common in families with hemorrhoids. If the parent has the problem, it's likely the child may have the problem, too.
