If you have cracks at the corners of the mouth which become very red and then take on a swollen whitish appearance, then these are easy to confuse with blistering. Although not life-threatening, these sores can be very painful indeed as eating, drinking and speaking are all everyday activities which worsen the condition as the skin never seems to get chance to heal.

If you leave them alone and do not apply any type of medicine (pharmaceutical or natural) they will be very painful and irritating. The best thing you can do is apply medicine at the first stages of an outbreak. This will reduce the amount of swelling, and will not allow the fever blister to spread.

But stress isn't the only cause of cold sores. Extreme temperatures, either warm or cold, can also cause cold sores. If you spend to much time out in the sun or on the other hand strong winds and cold weather can make you get an outbreak of cold sores as well.

The herpes virus stays in the body and once a person is infected with oral herpes, the virus stays in a nerve near the cheekbone. Now the virus can stay there or it can travel down the nerve of the skin surface which then causes a recurrence.

This is why it is very important to detect them early so that you can prevent them from fully developing.  Canker sores can be caused by several different factors but they usually occur because of stress.  Sometimes dry weather can also cause the lips to chap and eventually develop a fever blister. 

However, they say that only 30 percent that are infected will break out in a cold sore for type 1 herpes, which is the cold sore on the lip. Not everyone is susceptible to a herpes cold sore eruption. This is similar to other viruses where someone may be exposed to it but won't actually show symptoms.

You can take neem seed oil and apply it directly on your lip. This is found in health food stores and it is a remedy used for skin rashes including scabies in India. Neem is also used internally for digestive problems and in many Indian households is a staple like tylenol in the United States. Neem is also helpful for yeast infections and fungus. It has a pungent odor but can be very effective as a healing agent.

It can never be cured completely. But you can prevent more outbreaks by avoiding those things that seem to cause a sore to appear, such as exposure to the sun, illness, salty food or extreme stress, foods containing high levels of arginine, such as nuts and chocolate can cause an outbreak.

Fever Blisters can form on other parts of your body such as on your fingers. This is quite uncommon, but it does happen. At one time, my mother-in-law had one on her ear. Do not share towels. Also its best to avoid contact with infants and people with a weakened immune system.
